Seychelles Holiday

The Seychelles were not widely populated until the 17th century, despite being visited by Phoenicians, Malays, and Arabs and utilised by the Portuguese as a stopover in the 16th century. The islands became bases for privateers and pirates, so the governor of Mauritius (then known as Île de France) sent Lazare Picault to explore them in 1741. In 1756, the French declared the islands to be theirs, and starting in 1770, French colonists from Mauritius began to come with their African slaves. The pacifying strategies of Governor proved ineffective in thwarting British attempts to seize control in the late 18th century.
